I do actually have a favorite measuring tool. It is my small adjustable square if only for its versatility. With an easy to read twelve- inch ruler that slides through the handle it is quick to use. Simple to draw a 90-degree line on a two by four or a 45-degree line on a piece of angle iron.
It also acts as a depth gauge and as a marking gauge with an appropriate marker. The ruler is a perfect one inch wide and it comes with a built-in level. The whole package just says get it right.
