In an initiative to rejuvenate one of its oldest industries, the Canadian government has announced a substantial investment in the wool sector. Brenda Shanahan, Member of Parliament for Châteauguay-Lacolle, representing the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, unveiled a commitment of over $185,000 to the Canadian Wool Council (CWC).
This funding is a strategic move to build a more sustainable wool industry in Canada and increase global awareness of the high-quality characteristics of Canadian wool.
Wool, known for its natural, sustainable, and biodegradable properties, plays a crucial role in Canada's agricultural landscape. The revitalization of the wool industry aligns with global trends towards sustainability and offers consumers both domestically and internationally a variety of eco-friendly products.
This funding, part of the federal AgriMarketing Program under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), is set to empower the CWC in promoting Canadian wool. The focus is on building a distinctive brand, enhancing trade and export opportunities, and connecting with global best practices.
Additionally, the initiative aims to boost industry and consumer awareness through education and promotional activities.
The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, stated in a media release, "Canada has a world-class wool industry, and we’re thrilled to support the Canadian Wool Council in sharing the benefits of this high-quality and sustainable product both here in Canada and around the world."
The Sustainable CAP, a 5-year program with a $3.5-billion investment from federal, provincial, and territorial governments, is designed to strengthen the agriculture sector's competitiveness, innovation, and resilience.
This includes a $1 billion federal commitment and a $2.5 billion cost-shared commitment for provincially and territorially designed and delivered programs.
Coinciding with the first-ever Canadian meeting of the International Wool Textile Organization in Montreal, this announcement marks a significant step for the Canadian wool industry.
This event, featuring global delegates, focused on discussing industry trends and opportunities, emphasizing Canadian wool and the companies transforming it.
Matthew J. Rowe, CEO of the Canadian Wool Council and The Campaign for Wool – Canada, praised the investment, saying, "Canadian wool is renewable, sustainable, and biodegradable, and so versatile. We applaud today's investment from the Government of Canada, which demonstrates their commitment to developing the full potential of this natural fibre."
Ontario Sheep Farmers & Alberta Lamb Producers have also financially supported this initiative, highlighting the collective effort to elevate the Canadian wool industry. This move by the Canadian government and industry stakeholders signifies a robust commitment to sustainable agriculture and showcases Canada’s dedication to nurturing and promoting its heritage industries on a global stage.
