In the 1940s and 1950s a farm father might look at his son lazing about and tell him “go drag the pasture.” Dragging wasn’t an essential farm task but rather something done on a quiet afternoon. Dragging did much the same job as a chain harrow: it broke up and spread clumps of manure, it knocked seeds off seed heads—in general, dragging groomed a pasture.

To keep chickens from roosting on waterers (and making the water unfit for drinking), slip a feed bag or sack over the top of the waterer and hang it from the ceiling.
